Products containing codeine should not be prescribed to children undergoing tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy, says the FDA. Additionally, the agency will add a boxed warning contraindicating codeine's use in that circumstance.
The new labeling is based on a safety review conducted by the agency after receiving reports that three children died when they were given codeine for pain relief after surgery for obstructive sleep apnea.
