For the second year, we bring you our Journal Watch Hospital Medicine Top Stories. We have compiled two lists for 2010. First, our editors voted on the stories that they felt had the greatest effect on the practice of hospital medicine to create the Editors' Choice list. Second, we looked to you, our readers, for the Most-Read list.
When comparing the two lists, the most obvious finding is that none of the editors' selections were in the Most-Read list. How do we make sense of this? A similar result occurred last year, so we're not completely surprised. First off, half of the Most-Read articles are primary care studies. In contrast, we, the editors, concentrated on inpatient topics, such as intensive care unit management, perioperative medicine, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. However, we realize that, although you undoubtedly want inpatient content, you remain keenly interested in the articles that shape practice in general medicine. The other half of the Most-Read summaries comprised topics in emergency medicine and critical care, obviously subjects of interest to practicing hospitalists.
We hope that you find these lists helpful as you reflect upon the medical advances that have influenced your practice during 2010. If you have any comments, please send us e-mail or use our Reader Remarks feature to express your opinion on any individual summary on our site.
From our family to yours, best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.
