Many patient factors are associated with rehospitalization; however, in no study have researchers directly examined the association between sex and hospital utilization within 30 days of discharge. Investigators performed secondary analyses of data from a successful discharge intervention aimed at lowering post-discharge hospital utilization in an urban hospital in Boston (JW Hosp Med Feb 2 2009).
The data set represented 98% of the original cohort. Men returned to the emergency department (ED) or hospital within 30 days after index discharges at a rate of 47 times per 100 people monthly, whereas women returned at a rate of 29 times per 100 people monthly (incidence rate ratio, 1.62).
