In 2002, the CDC published guidelines for preventing intravascular catheter–related bloodstream infections (CR-BSIs); several small studies have shown that applying these guidelines can reduce the incidence of infections. Now, in a study encompassing 103 intensive care units (ICUs) in 62 Michigan and 5 out-of-state hospitals, researchers have assessed the utility of five evidence-based, CDC-recommended measures in reducing CR-BSI incidence.
Between March 2004 and September 2005, the ICUs implemented the study interventions: hand-washing, using full-barrier precautions for catheter insertion, disinfecting the skin with chlorhexidine, avoiding femoral sites, and removing catheters as soon as possible.
