Alcohol-based hand-rubs, with their excellent antimicrobial activity and ease of use, are now recommended for hand hygiene in hospitals. Hand-hygiene campaigns focus mainly on increasing the frequency of hand-rub use, often overlooking the technique used during application. Does education on technique improve bacterial killing? To find out, investigators in Switzerland studied the effects of a structured training program on hand-rub use among healthcare workers (HCWs). The 180 participants reported having used such hand-rubs for years.
