Studies examining whether vitamin supplementation reduces the risk for respiratory infections have produced conflicting results. To determine the effects of vitamin intake on risk for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), researchers analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study II, a prospective cohort study involving 116,671 U.S. female registered nurses who were aged 25 to 42 at enrollment in 1989. Information on vitamin intake (both dietary and supplemental) has been collected by questionnaire every 4 years since 1991.
