Although conventional wisdom suggests that a single active antibiotic is all that is necessary to treat most cases of severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), several studies have found evidence that combination therapy may be more effective than monotherapy (Journal Watch Infectious Diseases Sep 10 2004).
