Adherence to an antiretroviral regimen is required for optimal suppression of HIV replication. Using data gleaned from interviews conducted in 18 states from May 2000 through June 2004, CDC researchers examined HIV-infected patients’ reasons for nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Among 11,503 patients who were offered participation in the program, 5887 agreed and were evaluable; of these, 958 (16%) were nonadherent, defined as taking <95% of prescribed doses during the 48 hours before the interview.
In a multivariate analysis, nonadherence was significantly associated with black race, Hispanic ethnicity, age <40 years, alcohol or crack cocaine use during the previous 12 months, current ART regimen with ≥4 medications, homelessness…
