Coccidioidomycosis is a common problem in the southwestern U.S. and many parts of Latin America. Treatment of severe pulmonary coccidioidomycosis and disseminated infection can be difficult. Posaconazole, a recently approved triazole antifungal, has demonstrated high in vitro activity against Coccidioides immitis. Moreover, in a murine model of coccidioidomycosis, posaconazole was found to be ≥50 times more potent than itraconazole and ≥200 times more potent than fluconazole.
