Now that antiretroviral therapy (ART) can prevent most mother-to-child HIV transmission, more HIV-infected women are considering having children. However, most studies of pregnancy’s effect on HIV disease progression were performed before the current treatment era. Now, investigators have examined this association in a large cohort of HIV-infected women who received care at a Nashville, Tennessee, clinic between 1997 and 2004. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine variables associated with disease progression (defined as any new AIDS-defining event or death).
