Recent studies have suggested that the chemokine CXCL2 (also termed macrophage inflammatory protein-2) plays an important role in the development of sepsis. Might alterations in the genetic regulation of CXCL2 contribute to morbidity and mortality in patients with sepsis? Researchers in Spain previously identified two polymorphisms — a single nucleotide polymorphism and a short tandem repeat (STR) — in the promoter for the CXCL2 gene. Now, in a prospective observational study involving 183 patients treated for severe sepsis, these investigators have assessed whether the STR polymorphism is associated with outcome in individuals with this condition.
