Acute sinusitis is one of the most common reasons why patients seek medical care and physicians prescribe antibiotics. However, we have very limited evidence that antibiotic treatment is effective for most cases of sinusitis, and another possible treatment — topical steroids — has not been studied extensively. To better define the role of these therapies, researchers in England undertook a four-arm, randomized, placebo-controlled trial assessing the effectiveness of amoxicillin (500 mg 3 times daily for 7 days) and the topical steroid budesonide (200 µg in each nostril once daily for 10 days), alone or in combination, in patients aged >15 years with acute sinusitis.
