The emergence of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) — particularly of strains in the USA300 group — has been sudden and dramatic. The origin of the USA300 strains, and the extent of their genetic diversity, are unclear. To address these issues, researchers performed comparative whole-genome sequencing and virulence testing on 11 clinical USA300 isolates obtained between 2002 and 2005 in eight widespread states. The genome of one of the isolates had recently been sequenced by conventional methods; this strain was chosen as the reference strain against which the isolates were compared.
