Acute pancreatitis, although rarely caused by infection, can lead to infectious complications that increase morbidity and mortality. Now that prophylactic antibiotics have been shown not to prevent secondary infection in this situation, another strategy is needed. In a multisite, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study, researchers in the Netherlands examined the effects of a multispecies probiotic preparation, administered by nasojejunal tube for 28 days. The 296 participants had acute pancreatitis and were predicted to develop severe disease on the basis of one or more clinical indices. One of the researchers was employed by the manufacturer of the probiotic mixture used in the study.
