In recent years, reports of travel-related dengue fever have increased. The development of the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network provides a unique opportunity to collect data from ill returned travelers. The clinics that make up this network are located on six continents and are staffed by clinicians who specialize in travel/tropical medicine.
Among ill returned travelers seen at GeoSentinel clinics from October 1997 through February 2006, 522 (2.1%) had a diagnosis of dengue fever. Twelve (2.3%) of these patients developed dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue toxic shock syndrome. The largest number of cases occurred after visits to Thailand, India, Indonesia, or Brazil.
