Candida infective endocarditis (IE) is rare but often fatal. To increase understanding of this condition, researchers (with partial industry support) examined records from a database of IE cases registered from 61 centers in 28 countries.
Among 2749 cases of definite IE between June 2000 and August 2005, 33 (1.2%) were attributable to Candida infection. Forty-eight percent of these cases were caused by C. albicans, 21% by C. parapsilosis, 15% by C. glabrata, 9% by C. tropicalis, and 6% by unidentified species. Treatment data were available for 27 patients, of whom 59% received conventional or lipid amphotericin B, 44% received fluconazole, and 37% received caspofungin or voriconazole.
