Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Several small studies have suggested that CMV reactivation occurs frequently in critically ill immunocompetent patients, although whether such reactivation contributes to worse outcome in these individuals has been unclear (JW Infect Dis Feb 28 2005). To examine this issue, researchers conducted a prospective study (partially funded by industry) among CMV-seropositive immunocompetent adults who were admitted between 2004 and 2006 to any of six ICUs at two Seattle hospitals.
