Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with gastric cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths globally. In a multicenter, open-label trial involving H. pylori–infected patients aged 20 to 79 with early gastric cancer (newly diagnosed or postresection), investigators assessed whether eradicating H. pylori would reduce the risk for new gastric tumors. The study was performed in Japan, where the usual treatment for early mucosal gastric cancer is endoscopic resection. Because only a small amount of mucosa is resected, patients are at risk for cancer at other gastric sites.
