Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) bacteremia is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, but its incidence has never been defined in a population-based study. In two new investigations, researchers explore the incidence and characteristics of such infections.
In the first study, 69 patients with an evaluable first episode of Pa bacteremia between 1997 and 2006 were identified among residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota. The incidence (overall, 6.4 per 100,000 person-years) did not change significantly over time during the study period (P=0.418) but did increase significantly with age, particularly among men (P=0.007).
