Several studies have suggested that taking gastric acid–suppressing drugs, such as proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) or histamine-2–receptor antagonists, increases the risk for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), presumably by providing an acid-poor upper gastrointestinal milieu that allows for bacterial overgrowth (JW Infect Dis May 23 2007). Using General Practice Research Database records for May 1987 through April 2002, researchers in the U.K. (all of whom consult for or have grants from PPI manufacturers) performed a nested case-control study to examine the possible association between PPIs and CAP risk.
