Recently, Clostridium difficile–associated disease (CDAD) has increased in incidence and severity among adults in the U.S. Are such increases also occurring among children? To find out, investigators conducted a retrospective cohort study using records from the Pediatric Health Information System, which contains inpatient data from >40 tertiary care children’s hospitals in the U.S.
Data for 22 hospitals (all those with records available for 2001–2006) were analyzed. Inpatients <18 years old with CDAD were identified by discharge code and were included if they had a C. difficile toxin assay performed and received treatment directed against CDAD. A total of 4895 such patients were identified.
