Although the prevalence of Schistosoma japonicum infections in China has been reduced through use of antischistosomal drugs in mass treatment programs, the rate remains unacceptably high. Now, in a study involving four villages in Jiangxi Province, investigators have analyzed the effects of measures to reduce the transmission of S. japonicum from cattle and humans to snails.
In all four villages, control measures that had been instituted earlier (i.e., synchronous chemotherapy with praziquantel for all villagers and cattle, health education focusing on avoidance of snail-infested areas and associated lake water) were continued during the study period.
