Ritonavir-boosted lopinavir (LPV/r) is the most commonly used protease inhibitor in HIV-infected pregnant women. Previous studies have shown that with standard dosing, LPV plasma concentrations fall during the third trimester of pregnancy to approximately 50% of those seen in nonpregnant adults (JW Infect Dis Oct 18 2006). Now, the Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group has evaluated whether increasing the LPV/r dose during the third trimester results in levels comparable to those measured in nonpregnant adults taking standard doses.
