The incidence of childhood bloodstream infections (BSIs) can be influenced by many factors, including shifting demographics, new vaccines, and public health initiatives. Some studies have shown a reduction in BSI rates, but most have not been population-based. Now, researchers have surveyed a specific population: children residing in the Calgary Health Region (CHR) between 2000 and 2006. Four major acute care hospitals provide virtually all medical and surgical care to CHR residents, allowing population-based calculations. BSIs were identified by a regional laboratory system that receives ~99% of blood samples submitted by CHR facilities for culture.
