TB currently infects one third of the world’s population, and infected immunocompetent individuals have a 5% to 10% chance of developing active disease. A vaccine that is more immunogenic than BCG could substantially reduce TB incidence worldwide, but it must be safe in persons with latent infection.
In a study involving 12 volunteers with evidence of latent TB infection (LTBI), researchers in the U.K. evaluated the safety and efficacy of a new TB vaccine, MVA85A (modified vaccinia Ankara expressing antigen 85A). All participants demonstrated reactivity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis–specific antigens on an interferon-γ (IFN-γ) ELISpot assay.
