Data from previous epidemiologic studies suggest that receiving voriconazole may increase a patient’s risk for zygomycosis. Such risk is of particular concern now that voriconazole is used for prophylaxis among severely immunocompromised hosts.
To determine whether voriconazole exposure affects the virulence of Zygomycetes, investigators used experimental infection models involving fruit flies and corticosteroid-treated BALB/c mice for in vivo challenge. Zygomycetes strains used in “exposed” and “control” inocula were preincubated on yeast-extract agar glucose plates that did or did not contain subinhibitory concentrations of antifungal agents.
