As of April 29, the new swine influenza strain is reported to have caused the deaths of >150 people in Mexico and has spread to several other countries. In response, the WHO has raised the pandemic alert level to 4 (out of 6), indicating confirmed person-to-person transmission. The CDC has reported 91 cases of swine influenza in 10 states in the U.S. and had confirmed one death (a young Mexican child in the U.S. on a family visit). Federal and state emergency operations have been activated.
