Little is known about life expectancy and quality of life (QOL) among sepsis survivors. To learn more, researchers in Finland conducted a prospective observational cohort study involving 470 adults treated for severe sepsis at any of 24 ICUs between November 2004 and February 2005.
QOL before acute critical illness (252 patients) and after the sepsis episode (156 patients; median, 17 months later) was evaluated using a standardized EuroQol-5D questionnaire. Patients or next of kin completed the questionnaire, which includes measures of mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/disorder, and anxiety/depression. Data on death were obtained from Statistics Finland.
