On April 30, the CDC issued two dispatches describing the status of swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) case identification and disease spread in Mexico and in New York City.
Cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) were reported in several Mexican states in mid-April. Virus isolates were type A, but were not subtypable at first. Confirmation of typing as swine-origin influenza A by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction was accomplished on April 23, and a suspected case definition was developed: severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
