Pharyngeal gonococcal and chlamydial infections are not uncommon among men who have sex with men (MSM). To investigate the incidence and treatment outcomes of such infections, researchers reviewed records from the Hassle Free Men’s Clinic in Toronto for 1995 through 2007. During this period, throat, rectal, and urethral (or urine) cultures for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis were obtained for all men presenting for assessment of sexually transmitted diseases. In 2007, additional participants were recruited from a study (conducted at the same clinic) to evaluate nucleic acid assays for detection of N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis from rectal and pharyngeal swabs.
