Colonization and infection with hospital-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (HA-MRSA) have garnered much attention lately, and these problems are expected to worsen. Today, hospitals are increasingly discharging patients with major health problems to home healthcare, raising the risk for HA-MRSA transmission. To evaluate the prevalence and duration of MRSA colonization among inpatients discharged to home care, and the rate of and risk factors for MRSA transmission to household contacts, investigators conducted a large, prospective study involving a multicenter network of teaching hospitals and home healthcare units in France.
