Klebsiella pneumoniae is the second most common cause of gram-negative bacillary bacteremia. However, until now, no population-based study had been conducted on the incidence of Klebsiella bacteremia and its attendant risk factors.
In this study, researchers analyzed data on all 640 cases of K. pneumoniae bacteremia that had been reported in the Calgary, Alberta, Health Region (population, 1.2 million) from 2000 through 2007. Among these cases, 174 (27%) were classified as nosocomial, 276 (43%) as healthcare associated, and 190 (30%) as community acquired.
