Mesotherapy involves the injection of various substances into the tissue beneath the skin to sculpt body contours by lysing subcutaneous fat. Cutaneous infections (generally caused by rapidly growing mycobacteria) are the most commonly reported complications of this procedure.
In December 2006, a patient presented to a Paris hospital with cutaneous abscesses that developed after mesotherapy. Investigators identified 15 additional patients who had received mesotherapy injections from the same practitioner between October 2006 and January 2007 and had similar abscesses.
