Given the substantial morbidity and mortality of 2009 H1N1 influenza in children, the best vaccination strategy for this group is a major question. Because studies of seasonal influenza vaccines have shown that two doses are required to provide optimal protection for children aged ≤9 years, the CDC has recommended that this population receive two doses of the monovalent 2009 H1N1 vaccine. Now, data from a manufacturer-sponsored, multicenter, controlled trial suggest that a single dose of H1N1 vaccine is adequate for most young children.
