Infants may be at increased risk for severe dengue virus (DENV) infection because of the presence of maternal DENV antibodies, which can be associated with antibody-dependent enhancement of viral replication. Investigators recently conducted a prospective study in a semiurban community in the Philippines to examine DENV infections during infancy.
Healthy infants aged 6 to 18 weeks were enrolled and followed for acute febrile illnesses. Among 4441 infants, 353 had acute undifferentiated febrile illnesses between January 2007 and January 2008.
