We have strong evidence showing that acute coronary events can be precipitated by infections and that influenza vaccination reduces the risk for myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke. One recent trial has suggested that pneumococcal vaccination provides similar protection against cardiovascular events (CMAJ 2008; 179:773). To further explore this possibility, researchers analyzed prospectively collected data from the California Men's Health Study (84,170 men aged 45–69 in January 2000).
