Polio eradication efforts face many challenges, including cost and the circulation of vaccine-derived polioviruses. Two new studies address these issues.
Jenkins and colleagues analyzed the largest recorded outbreak of paralytic disease associated with circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV), in Nigeria. During an intensified polio surveillance program, they collected stool samples, clinical data, and vaccine histories for all cases of acute flaccid paralysis with onset from January 2005 through June 2009 in children aged <15 years. Polioviruses were analyzed to determine whether they were wild type or vaccine related.
