On July 29, 2010, the FDA alerted healthcare providers and patients that it had identified seven cases in which daptomycin was temporally associated with development of eosinophilic pneumonia. A review determined that this illness, which developed 2 to 4 weeks after initiation of daptomycin therapy, was most likely caused by the drug. Symptoms resolved when daptomycin was discontinued but recurred in two patients when the drug was restarted. Eosinophilic pneumonia was also possibly associated with daptomycin therapy in 36 additional patients.
Eosinophilic pneumonia should be suspected in patients receiving daptomycin who develop new or worsening fever, cough, dyspnea, or difficulty breathing. Peripheral eosinophilia may or may not be present…
