One lineage of Escherichia coli, ST131, has been associated with resistance to β-lactams (through production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases [ESBLs], especially CTX-M-15) and to fluoroquinolones. This lineage has been increasingly prevalent in many regions worldwide. To determine whether it is a major contributor to the current rise in antibiotic-resistant E. coli infections in the U.S., researchers examined isolates collected from hospitalized patients in 2007 as part of two antimicrobial-surveillance programs.
