Hepatitis E virus (HEV) has become the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis in many regions, including South Asia. Investigators recently conducted a longitudinal cohort study in rural Bangladesh — where HEV is endemic — to assess the infection rate during an 18-month period.
Randomly selected participants were interviewed to obtain health and socioeconomic data, and serum was collected for baseline HEV antibody testing. Children aged <1 year were excluded.
