Clinical trials comparing linezolid and vancomycin for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections have yielded conflicting results. Although some of these trials have shown better outcomes with linezolid, most have shown equal efficacy for these two antibiotics.
To investigate this issue in a real-world setting, researchers in the U.S. conducted a retrospective cohort study involving adults who had been admitted to Veterans Affairs hospitals from January 2002 through June 2008 with MRSA infections and had received more than one dose of either linezolid or vancomycin.
