Concern has lingered regarding the safety of the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine — in particular, its risk for causing Guillain-Barré syndrome. Taking advantage of a large 5-day public gathering in China, investigators from the Beijing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. CDC conducted a mass vaccination program and evaluated the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine used.
The monovalent split-virion vaccine was offered to individuals aged ≥4 years. Passive surveillance for adverse events was conducted, and event severity was graded on a four-point scale.
