Parapoxvirus infections in ruminants (e.g., orf virus infections in sheep and goats; pseudocowpox virus infections in cattle) are seen worldwide. Humans can acquire these viruses by direct contact with infected animals.
In 2009, parapoxvirus infections were suspected in two hunters in the U.S. who developed index-finger nodules after field-dressing white-tailed deer. Tissue specimens from these patients were sent to the CDC, where they were subjected to sophisticated laboratory analyses.
