During the fall of 2009, influenza vaccination programs in most European countries included influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccines in addition to the 2009–2010 seasonal influenza vaccines. Researchers recently conducted a multicenter case-control study to estimate the effectiveness of these vaccines against medically attended influenza-like illness (ILI) that was laboratory confirmed to be pandemic H1N1 infection.
The study involved 2902 patients who presented with typical ILI symptoms to any of 699 sentinel physicians in France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Portugal, and Spain. Nasal or throat swabs were taken from the patients and tested for 2009 H1N1 virus by polymerase chain reaction or viral culture.
