Researchers examining outcomes among patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia have usually focused on 30-day or in-hospital mortality. But how do surviving patients fare after discharge home or to a long-term care facility? Two research groups recently examined this issue.
Wolkewitz and colleagues conducted a cohort analysis involving 3132 adults who were admitted to Ninewells Hospital in Scotland between January 2005 and September 2006. Sixty of the patients developed S. aureus bacteremia while hospitalized; the causative organism was methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) in 26 patients and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) in 34.
