Aedes aegypti, the main vector for dengue virus (DENV), is abundant in urban tropical and subtropical areas. Most studies and mosquito-control activities have focused on homes and peridomestic environments. In a recent study, investigators checked schools in Merida, Mexico, for infected human-biting mosquitoes.
Adult mosquitoes were collected during daytime hours at 24 schools from October 2008 to December 2009. They were captured with CDC-style backpack aspirators both indoors (e.g., from furniture, behind hanging clothes and curtains, and in dark and humid places, where mosquitoes may rest) and outdoors (mostly immediately adjacent to the school building).
