Recurrent skin and soft-tissue infection (SSTI) is perhaps the most frustrating aspect of Staphylococcus aureus carriage. When such infections occur, clinicians often take measures to eradicate S. aureus carriage. But what decolonization regimen should be used, and how effective might it be? To address these questions, researchers in St. Louis (1 of whom received grant support from a manufacturer of mupirocin) performed an open-label, randomized trial comparing four interventions:
Personal and household hygiene education alone
Education, plus twice-daily nasal mupirocin for 5 days
Education, plus nasal mupirocin and daily body washes with 4% chlorhexidine for 5 days
