Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is a common opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients, including those with HIV infection. Corticosteroids are of proven benefit as adjunctive treatment for PCP in HIV-infected patients and should be given to such individuals within 72 hours after antibiotic initiation if the PaO2 is ≤70 mm Hg. However, the benefit of adjunctive corticosteroids for non–HIV-associated PCP remains unknown.
