Dear Readers,
This is the third year that we have selected “Top Stories” for Journal Watch Infectious Diseases. For 2010, the most common topic was bacterial infections and their complications. In 2011, two themes predominate: advances in vaccinology and our growing understanding of the microbiome and its influence on infectious and oncologic diseases. We may well see substantial interaction between these two themes in the future.
