Pregnant women and infants who contract influenza are at particular risk for severe illness. Vaccination of infants aged <6 months is not recommended; however, previous studies have shown that seasonal influenza vaccine given during pregnancy is protective to both the mothers and their babies. Now, in a phase II, prospective clinical trial, investigators in France have examined whether an influenza A (H1N1) vaccine might be similarly protective.
In this partially industry-funded study, 107 pregnant women (58 in their second trimester, 49 in their third) received a single injection of nonadjuvanted, monovalent 2009 influenza A (H1N1) vaccine containing 15 µg of hemagglutinin.
